The original sketch for this drawing was done as one of my proposals for the 2014 NPR calendar. Even though it wasn’t selected for the final, the concept was so personal and special to me, I couldn’t help but continue to work on it in order to see it come to life.
I’m so excited to share the piece I created for the 2014 National Public Radio Calendar!
My love for radio began when I was around six years old. I started a pretend radio show from my small Fisher Price tape recorder and shared the cassettes with close friends and family. I was a shy kid so, I spent hours alone and the characters and stories I created for my show always kept me entertained.
With time I lost that intimate connection to radio until I discovered NPR when I moved from the Dominican Republic to New York to study. I started listening to many of the shows while working alone from home and found great company in radio once again. Like a good friend NPR has become a reliable and enriching presence in my life.
That’s part of the reason why this project has been so special to me. I feel incredibly honored to be part of this along with so many talented illustrators. And I’m so grateful to Katie Burk the designer and art director for this project as well as the rest of the NPR Creative Services team who put together such a beautiful calendar every year.
